Department Summary
This position works closely with the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity as well as other leaders across the university to provide visionary and strategic leadership of OHIO’s innovation, economic development, corporate research, and technology commercialization activities. This position requires experience building collaborations with public, non-profit, and private sector organizations; other universities; federal labs and institutes; and leaders and organizations in the community, region, and state.
Partnership Development: Teams with Advancement, the Office of Community Engagement, and the Provost’s Office to build on and expand relationships with industry, government and foundations to help advance opportunities for collaborative research and innovation.
Technology Development: Oversees the Technology Transfer team to support and encourage university-wide programs for intellectual property development, innovation and engagement with business and venture communities in the region, across the nation and around the globe. This includes working with the Technology Transfer team, and individual faculty as needed to understand faculty commercialization goals and assist in helping faculty plan a commercialization strategy.
Entrepreneurship: Oversees the Innovation Center to coordinate among OHIO’s innovation ecosystem that includes components such as the Voinovich School, the Center for Entrepreneurship and the CoLab, to leverage the Innovation Center to incubate, accelerate and scale business opportunities. This includes working with the Innovation Center team, and individual faculty as needed, to maximize opportunities such as developing SBIR or
STTR applications, recruiting new Innovation Center clients, and ensuring that we are measuring and monitoring the impact of the Innovation Center.
Position Profile
Covers a broad spectrum of strategic, proactive, and capacity building activities designed to enable and enhance the competitiveness of research programs and proposals. Responsibilities may include: funding opportunity identification and targeted dissemination; grant and contract proposal development; research team building; interaction with funding agencies, institutional research and leadership; interaction with institutional federal relations; and outreach activities and training.
Level Summary
Responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of complex functional areas or multiple departments. Formulates policies, strategies, and systems that enhance the University’s position in the competitive marketplace. Leads large, complex teams, possibly managing multiple layers of managers. Contributes to shaping the long-term strategic vision of the University, ensuring alignment with overarching goals.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manages entire business units or divisions. Directly oversees at least 2.0 FTE employees or one or more supervisors. Has authority to hire, transfer, suspend, promote, manage performance, discharge, assign duties, reward, and discipline employees.
Fiscal Responsibilities
Oversees multi-million dollar budgets, manages budget for a major business or academic unit.
Problem Solving
Solves highly complex, University-wide problems with long-term consequences.
Independence of Action
Full autonomy in decision-making, accountable for business outcomes.
Communication and Collaboration
Leads communication with board members, partners, and internal/external stakeholders. Responsible for successful implementation of organizational goals.
Requirements
Physical Requirements
This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Master’s degree in a related field, 15 or more years of related professional experience, and 9 or more years of supervisory experience, or equivalent education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD degree from an accredited institution with 5+ years of progressive responsibility in relevant areas such as technology transfer, innovation, entrepreneurship and/or economic development.
Experience working in a university research enterprise managing a research park or similar innovation center.

Pay Rate
This position is a Pay Grade 23 and starting salary will depend on candidate’s experience and qualifications.
