Description
The Director is responsible for designing, developing and evaluating the effectiveness of the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting Program. Duties will also include adjunct teaching responsibilities or clinical supervision responsibilities. Director is responsible for designing, developing and evaluating the effectiveness of the Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting Program. The hiring range for non-licensed Dentists is $64,361.54 - $70,797.69. Licensed Dentist salary will be negotiable.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
An Iowa licensed dental hygienist who is a graduate of a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and possesses a master’s or higher degree who has background in education and the professional experience necessary to understand and fulfill the program goals.
OR
A licensed dentist who has background in education and the professional experience necessary to understand and fulfill the program goals.
A Dental Hygienist appointed as director, must have “Certified Dental Assistant” credentials with occupational experiences with four handed dentistry, or be willing to acquire within the first 6 months of employment.
Administrative experience, instructional experience, and professional experience in clinical practice either as a dental hygienist or working with a dental hygienist is preferred.

- Prepare applicable Iowa Board of Education, American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation applications, curriculum development, student admission processes, student manual, policy and safety protocols, HIPAA/OSHA/Bloodborne pathogen compliance, self-study, reports, documentation and subsequent sight visits.
- Direct oversight of equipment needs, evaluation simulations, typodonts, development of laboratory, pre-clinic, clinical and clinical enrichments/externship rotation experiences assisting a dentist in two or more dental offices for the Dental Assisting program.
- Prepare contractual agreements providing assurance of external clinical experiences for Dental Assisting students.
- Develop student schedules ensuring appropriate and sufficient experiences.
- Program planning, staffing, management, coordination and evaluation.
- Operation, supervision, evaluation and revision of the programs.
- Curriculum development, evaluation, and revision.
- Selection, supervision for faculty appointments, evaluations, teaching assignments, and schedules.
- Student recruitment, schedules, assignments
- Initiation of program or department in-service and faculty development.
- Assessing, planning, and operating program facilities and Dental Assisting externships.
- Assists with the budget for the dental hygiene clinic and Dental Assisting program.
- Coordination, evaluation, and participation in determining admission criteria and procedures as well as student promotion and retention criteria.
- Review and accept applications for admissions into the Dental Hygiene Program and Dental Assisting Program.
- Contribute to the achievement of department goals.
- Provide leadership to the programs and maintain compliance with the essentials of the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation.
- Evaluate effectiveness of the theoretical and clinical components of the Dental Hygiene Program and Dental Assisting Program.
- Provide information in response to direct inquiries regarding the allied dental programs.

- Create program handbooks for students and clinical agencies.
- Produce requisitions for equipment and supplies for the programs.
- Independently prepare correspondence for staff signature.
- Enter student course schedules into the computer system.
- Prepare required items for department program events. (i.e. Pinning Ceremonies)
- Serve as an academic advisor to pre-dental hygiene and dental assisting students, current dental hygiene and dental assisting students.
- Recruit students for the Allied dental programs.
- Demonstrate current knowledge of the dental hygiene and dental assisting curriculum by presentations, activities, questions, and responses relevant to the course syllabus.
- Design and utilize a variety of teaching strategies and technologies appropriate for the courses
- Effectively organize and teach assigned classes and clinics as specified by the division dean.
- Ensures the program maintains adequate and accurate records on class attendance and student grades.
- Report and discuss program progress and concerns with the direct supervisor.
- Coordinate the student’s clinical experience (i.e. clinical contracts, make student assignments, supplemental experiences/opportunities, externships/rotations to dental offices, etc.)
- Ensure clinical equipment is in working condition.
- Produce agendas and minutes of meetings for advisory committees, faculty, and departmental meetings.
- Maintain data on programs (i.e.. Student survey documents, course end documents).
- Ensures the clinical equipment and supplies are ordered to fill patient needs.

- Attend meetings as required by the College.
- Support/attend College sponsored activities and events.
- Conduct Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting Advisory Committee meetings.
- Assist students in making application for the Board of Registry exams.
- Serve on departmental and college committees/teams.
- Hire part-time dental hygiene instructors and dentists for the clinic.
- Evaluate part-time faculty on a regular basis.
- Assist with the evaluation process of full-time faculty
- Meet regularly with part-time clinic instructors to ensure consistency in teaching methods.
- Keep abreast of accreditation, certification and licensure examination requirements.
