Title: Director, TRIO Program for Student Achievement
Unit: Non-Unit Professional (NUP) (Grant Funded Position)
Department: Student Affairs, Student Support Services
Reports to: Assistant Dean of Student Support Services
General Summary: The Director is responsible for overseeing all day-to-day operations within the TRIO Program for Student Achievement (PSA) serving 100 eligible students with documented disabilities, in close collaboration with the Student Access and Support Services Office. The PSA provides academic and financial aid advising, career and transfer counseling, and individualized tutoring. The Director recruits and supervises staff and eligible students, delivery of services to eligible students, direct service activities, and management and administration of the grant budget. The Director is responsible for the development and administration of all grant procedural elements and program policy; and overseeing the development of evaluations, annual performance reports and continuation grants.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages all aspects of the PSA, including recruitment of staff and students, direct service activities, and budget administration. Interviews, hires and supervises staff to provide services within the PSA.
- Oversees the development of evaluations and annual performance reports for the program.
- Develops and maintains procedural elements of the program policy.
- Coordinates relationships with other programs and divisions of the college.
- Oversees the maintenance of an accurate, current record-keeping system.
- Develops, manages, and monitors the PSA budget.
- Maintains positive relationships with Faculty and staff of MCC regarding courses, student progress and status, and Supplemental Instruction and support provided to PSA students.
- Maintains external relations with the Department of Education and other TRIO programs.
- Promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
- Provides supplemental instruction and academic and adjustment support to PSA students as needed.
- Ensures that the grant management database is maintained, updated, and edited.
- Facilitates referrals to appropriate community agencies (e.g., Community Mental Health providers, Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission) to assist students in obtaining services necessary to be successful in the postsecondary educational environment.
- Consults regularly with community agencies and resources to assist with ongoing support of students with psychiatric disabilities.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge in applicable areas to include current knowledge of trends and practices in the field through peer association, attendance at seminars, review of literature to maintain a working knowledge of adaptive and assistive technology, and of trends and best practices in disability support services.
- Serves as an academic advisor for eligible PSA students to include assisting students in identifying appropriate courses which best fulfill their educational and career goals and using the advising system.
- Meets with students on a regular basis to ensure that needs are being met and to assist appropriately in developing self-advocacy skills.
- Participates in training on school policies and procedures for providing academic advising to PSA students.
- Collaborates with staff in TRIO Student Success Program, Student Access and Support Services, and other co-curricular and support services for PSA students.
- Collaborates and coordinates support services to eligible PSA students, and serves as a student advocate within the academic community.
- Attends and participates in informational activities including orientation and opening day, honors, scholarship, leadership awards and commencement programs.
- Attends and participates in programs in the local communities including community advocacy groups.
- Participates in professional development opportunities and plans and participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
- Participates in college wide planning on issues related to student support services and support to special populations.
- Participates in Faculty Staff Association and ad hoc committees, as requested by the Dean of Students and the Assistant Dean of Student Support Services.
- Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Special Education, or a closely related field; minimum of three years of extensive experience working directly with individuals with disabilities, particularly recent experience supporting students with psychiatric and emotional disabilities, and working with diverse student populations in an education setting or comparable setting; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Excellent communication, organization, leadership, and planning skills.
- Experience with program and budget management, including oversight of federally-funded education programs and grant administration.
- Familiarity with issues affecting disabled, low-income, and first-generation college students.
- Experience implementing disability support services programs and providing case management.
- Demonstrated ability in staff development and supervision of employees.
- Ability to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and goals.
- Proven capacity to form strong coalitions with internal and external constituencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual skills a plus
Additional Information:
This position is supported through federal grant funding. While the college is fully committed to the success of this program, continued employment in this role is contingent upon ongoing grant funding. Should federal funding change in the future, the position may be impacted.
Salary Range: $80,000 - $84,000; actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Employees of Middlesex Community College are considered employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and receive benefits, which include:
