JOB SUMMARY:
OWS is seeking an Equity Research Analyst to join our short specialist team to perform in-depth fundamental research to uncover new short ideas and help evolve, refine and improve both our research products and process. The successful candidate may come from a prior equity analyst position at a sell-side research firm, hedge fund, or long-only investment firm, or have a background in industry or business journalism. We are looking for a generalist willing to analyze multiple sectors, including consumer, industrials, and business services, but will consider analysts with specific skills in other areas, including technology and healthcare. The Equity Analyst will work directly with OWS partners as well as with the team of Equity Analysts.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct fundamental research on companies and industries under the direction of OWS partners.
- Utilize independent research to generate investment ideas, both long and short, with a heavy focus on short ideas.
- Write up investment theses and discuss research findings and analysis with team members in a collaborative manner.
- Prepare detailed written research reports, outlines and presentations on companies under consideration.
- Analyze business models and financial statements of global public companies (with a focus on U.S.) to assess competitive positioning, potential business risks and accounting practices.
- Conduct financial modeling and valuation analysis on companies under consideration.
- Connect regularly with OWS clients to communicate research findings and build relationships with portfolio managers, analysts and research associates.
- Collaborate with team members to help improve idea generation and refine the research process, as well as increase productivity and efficiency through the use of AI tools and other automation technologies.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree required. CFA is a plus. Preferred areas of study include accounting, computer science, engineering, math, physics and finance. Past participation in academic investment clubs is a plus.
- A few years of experience in financial research or accounting is preferred.
- Strong analytical skills with a willingness to think independently, challenge conventional investment wisdom and a comfort in taking contrarian views relative to Wall Street consensus.
- High level of curiosity for learning about business models, industries and the investment process.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, and ability to collaborate and work well both independently and in a small team environment.
- Proficiency in reading and analyzing financial statements.
- Financial modeling experience in Excel and/or Google Sheets is a strong plus.
- Programming experience is a plus.
