The Gas OQ Training Specialist is responsible for training functions specific to the daily work activities of the Operator Qualification Training group, which manages the Gas Operator Qualifications Program and the associated training, examinations, and performance evaluations for gas utility staff working in new construction, operations, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide accurate and appropriate training to prepare new hires for gas-qualified positions.
Deliver refresher and remedial training to current staff.
Facilitate hands-on training, proctor written exams, and conduct performance evaluations.
Ensure a comfortable, judgment-free testing environment.
Oversee contractor OQ programs to ensure compliance.
Identify and document gaps or weaknesses in OQ programs; recommend improvements.
Assist in the operation and upkeep of training facilities, including buildings, grounds, technology, and specialized equipment.
Train staff and third-party personnel on standard operating procedures and covered tasks.
Represent the organization before external bodies (e.g., regulators), including expert testimony when required.
Develop working relationships with contractors and subcontractors.
Serve as technical advisor for gas practices when necessary.
This position is considered Essential Personnel and may require work during emergencies, hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of local, state, and federal codes/regulations for gas distribution systems.
Understanding of workforce training methods.
Familiarity with gas system components and materials.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); some experience with GIS mapping systems.
Ability to supervise, manage time effectively, and prioritize multiple tasks.
Ability to identify hazardous conditions/situations.
Skill in creating and delivering classroom and hands-on training materials.
Requirements
Minimum Training and Experience:
High school diploma or GED.
One year of specialized or technical training beyond high school.
Five years of related work experience.
Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.
Licensing, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
Valid drivers license.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
Familiarity with Title 49 CFR Parts 191 & 192, OSHA regulations (Title 29 CFR), API, NFPA 54, PHMSA, DIMP, and PSMS.
Knowledge of operator qualification standards and gas pipe installation practices.
Experience reading gas/GIS maps.
At least eight years of field inspector/engineer experience or equivalent in the natural gas industry.
Knowledge of gas facility repairs and installations.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Valid drivers license.
