Under the supervision of the Water/Wastewater Superintendent, the Chief Mechanic is responsible for directing and performing preventative and corrective maintenance on machinery and equipment used by the Water and Water Reclamation Departments.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises and oversees daily mechanical maintenance operations for Water and Water Reclamation. Reviews daily, weekly, and monthly projects with the Superintendent. Coordinates daily functions of maintenance employees, including scheduling time off. Works alongside subordinate employees in the field as assigned. Maintains all department records and reports as required by the Superintendent and/or governing bodies. Enforces all City, State, and Federal safety standards. Assists the Superintendent with preparation of the annual maintenance budget. Interacts professionally with the public, contractors, elected officials, and outside organizations. Collaborates closely with the Chief Water Operator, Chief Water Reclamation Operator, and City Hall staff. Conducts field surveys and inspections of City infrastructure and systems to determine necessary repairs and preventive maintenance. Performs weekly inspections and distributes maintenance assignments. Maintains records of materials used and recommends purchases to Superintendent of Water/Water Reclamation. Reports unusual or complex issues to the Superintendent. Demonstrates continuous improvement efforts in operations and efficiency. Works cooperatively to provide highquality customer service. Works overtime as necessary to respond to unexpected departmental needs.
Requirements
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS – EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree preferred in an industrial mechanicsrelated field. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in industrial mechanics, with two (2) years of supervisory experience preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
COMPETENCIES
Working knowledge of computerized maintenance management software. Understanding of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant processes. Knowledge of waterwell and liftstation maintenance, pumps, chemical feed equipment, HVAC systems, and basic electrical systems. Ability to read plant drawings, electrical schematics, and O&M manuals. General knowledge of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant machinery and equipment. Knowledge of safety practices including hazardous chemical handling, traffic control, excavation safety, and confined space entry. Demonstrates high safety standards and accountability. Knowledge of budget development and management. Understanding of equipment, materials and methods used in water/wastewater construction, maintenance, and repair. Must meet residency requirements within one (1) year of hire.

Communicates professionally on behalf of the City/RMU. Actively listens and demonstrates full comprehension. Explains technical concepts clearly to coworkers and customers.

Must meet physical requirements for respiratory protection. Must be able to use close vision and adjust focus. Must be available for regular scheduling and callins. Must perform all tasks safely and efficiently in compliance with safety regulations.
