Description

Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a strong manager and strategist to lead all aspects of one of its major and ongoing public health research initiatives, the Delphi group, as well as coordinate other research activities that may craft the future of public health and have a real world impact in the next several years.

As the Executive Director, the selected candidate will report jointly to the leadership of the Delphi group and the Vice President of Research. They will work with leaders in the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and across the relevant Schools and Colleges to identify, coordinate and lead all aspects of projects and initiatives that have the potential to leverage key strengths of CMU to transform public health research domestically and globally.

Ideal candidates would have a strong background and demonstrated experiences in project and operations management coupled with some previous experience related to public health and/or health related sectors, government relations and/or industry relations.

Duties and responsibilities:

1. Serve as a thought partner, working with the rest of the Delphi leadership team to actively drive Delphi’s vision, strategy and implementation plan.

Implement and oversee Delphi’s strategic plan:

  • Develop a multi year road map in support of Delphi’s vision.
  • Assume responsibility for all of Delphi operational systems and production results.

2. Oversee all administration and general operations of Delphi:

  • Provide counsel and comprehensive support to the rest of the Delphi leadership team on finance, personnel, operations, fundraising, and other policy matters.
  • Identify and help resolve issues that affect the overall functioning of the team and Delphi's systems.
  • Lead all aspects of and manage resource allocation.

3. Develop, nurture and lead strategic relationships with key internal and external stakeholders:

  • Lead Delphi’s essential communications and partnership efforts.
  • Explore and identify new proposals and opportunities for funding and lead periodic meetings to review and select.
  • Together with the rest of the Delphi leadership team, work to build and scale the impact of Delphi’s work.

4. Collaborate with faculty and colleagues in OVPR to identify and shape new opportunities for CMU’s strengths to positively impact the field of public health via unique partnerships or funding opportunities.

5. Participate in academic and public discourse on technological and scientific innovation in support of public health. Maintain and nurture relationships with public health agencies (local, state, national and international) and other relevant academic institutions.

6. Represent the broader community of CMU researchers with work relevant to public health in meetings with funding agencies, congressional representatives and/or other prospective funders.

Minimum requirements/qualifications (“Must haves”):

  • Bachelor's degree; 10+ years of additional education and/or meaningful experience, including 5+ years proven ability with managing/leading similar-sized efforts
  • Successful background check

Other desired qualifications, skills and experiences (“Nice to Haves”):

  • Graduate degree or experience in public health and epidemiology
  • Experience with managing and pursuing funding opportunities
  • Experience with leading collaborative goal-setting, e.g., quarterly OKRs
  • Experience in facilitating translation of research programs to “market” and “real-world” impact;
  • Familiarity the software development life cycle (especially in GitHub) is a plus
  • Familiarity with basic data science & computational statistics is a plus

About the Delphi Group

Founded in 2012, the mission of the Delphi group is to develop the theory and practice of epidemic tracking and forecasting. Delphi is one of the most widely-recognized and respected labs for flu and COVID forecasting in the world, has numerous active partnerships and collaborators in government, technology, and healthcare, and runs operational systems that are relied on by many of these organizations.

About the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR)

The Vice President for Research (VPR) is the Senior Research Officer of the University. Their office is responsible for several specific functions critical to the universities research mission, including the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) and the Office of Government Relations. In addition the VPR is the senior executive responsible for the major entrepreneurship and enterprise creation programs at CMU via their oversight of the Center for Technology and Enterprise Creation (CTTEC) and the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship.
