Description

WHO WE ARE

The Humane League (THL) is a global nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, we’ve grown to a staff of 90+ talented individuals dispersed across the country and around the world.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

As the Interim Public Relations Director, you will be accountable for building The Humane League’s (THL’s) credibility and exposing our mission, our movement, and our work to the media, celebrities, and influencers—those who reach and impact millions of people.

You have a deep background of experience in PR and media relations, with a proven track record in securing highly visible feature stories in leading national and international media outlets, including print, online, broadcast (radio and TV), and podcasts. Critically, you possess persuasive written and verbal communications skills, an active network of applicable media and influencer contacts, and a can-do, relentless, and inherently positive attitude. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Marketing & Communications.

This is a temporary, full-time, remote position for a one year period from approximately October 2022 - October 2023. We are only able to consider applicants who reside in the United States and possess United States work authorization.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead our PR strategy, focused on securing prominent exposure with local, national, and international business-, consumer-, and trade- media outlets and with mission-aligned celebrities and social influencers.

  • Leverage existing media, celebrity, and influencer relationships, and cultivate relationships with new contacts.

  • Manage our PR Manager while partnering on PR activities, including but not limited to: crafting and disseminating big creative media pitches, 1:1 media outreach, and press releases.

  • Manage our Partnership Specialist in building partnerships with mission-aligned celebrities and social influencers to raise awareness of our cause.

  • Manage our target media, celebrity, and influencer lists in collaboration with the PR Manager and Partnership Specialist, including those in mainstream news, business, science, animal welfare, food, agriculture, philanthropy, and activism.

  • Oversee our media speaking points and FAQ’s, including creating and updating new and existing content.

  • Media train our President, Corporate Engagement, Organizing, Open Wing Alliance (and other) team members in being consistent spokespeople for the organization when talking to the media, managing interviews, and conducting follow-ups.

  • Manage external crisis communications, to help the organization adeptly navigate and communicate around crises, and partner with our Chief of Staff on guiding internal communications.

  • Partner with, and support, our international and OWA communications team members  in developing aligned media plans and messaging across regions.

  • Manage our media relations database, MuckRack, and update media mentions, as needed, on Slack, our website, and for Quarterly and Annual Reports.

  • Collaborate closely with our Communications team, Organizing team, Corporate Engagement team, and others to set and reach our media, celebrity, and influencer goals, while supporting the broader organization’s aims, including our campaigns to influence the world’s largest companies to adopt and adhere to animal welfare commitments.

  • Monitor and evaluate results and success on a monthly basis and contribute to quarterly team and organizational goal updates.

  • Ensure cohesive and consistent brand messaging across our media, celebrity, and influencer relations messaging, in-line with our organization-wide messaging.

  • Maintain a knowledge of changing trends in media and influencer relations and within the animal protection movement.

  • Manage our strategic and day-to-day PR work with sensitivity, upholding and building our positive reputation.

  • Manage relationships with copywriters and freelance writers to develop thought leadership opportunities, including opinion pieces and Twitter management, for the President and other spokespeople.

  • Manage a small team of direct reports, supporting them with their goals, their personal development, and their overall contribution to THL and our movement.

  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • At least 7 years of experience working in PR / Media Relations with agencies, non-profits, or for profit organizations critically contributing to an overarching Communications strategy.

  • Excellent persuasive written and verbal communications skills, including a critical eye for detail to ensure clear and consistent messaging in line with our organizational Style Guide. Experience coordinating organizational and crisis communications.

  • Solid organization and people management skills, as well as a strong ability to manage projects and time wisely.

  • A knack for building relationships with targeted national, regional, and international media across a variety of mediums, including: online media, print media, broadcast, and podcasts/radio.

  • A proven track record in securing highly visible feature stories in leading consumer and trade media outlets.

  • Influencer relations experience, working with celebrities and/or influencers with a cultivated, and active, network of applicable media and influencer contacts.

  • Solid strategic thinking ability and experience crafting big creative media pitches, 1:1 outreach, and press releases.

  • Experience conducting media training sessions / providing strategic interview counsel for team members.

  • A working knowledge of media and influencer databases, including MuckRack and IMDBPro, as well as project management tools, such as Asana.

  • An authentic alignment with our mission and animal protection work.
